Periodontics is dental care that addresses problems with tissues around the teeth (the gums and bone). Because your gums comprise an extremely important part of your smile and overall oral health picture, it’s important to take care of them. Your gums and bone are the foundation for your teeth; these tissues anchor the roots of the teeth and you want this part of your mouth to be as healthy as it can be since your gums are susceptible to a number of diseases (such as gingivitis) if not properly cared for. In fact, tooth loss is largely correlated to gum disease, so if you want to keep your smile intact you’ll need to make periodontal care a priority. Our staff stresses prevention, first and foremost, but we are also equipped to deal with early to late-stage gum disease. Patients diagnosed with periodontal disease will typically begin treatment with a technique called scaling and root planting. Basically, this cleans the surface of the teeth located under the gums. If you have overly sensitive teeth our staff can provide a local anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort you might experience during this procedure. Ultimately, scaling and root planting are simple techniques that can halt gum disease and allow your gums to rebound to their pink, firm and healthy form.
